Loosen lug nuts and raise the vehicle

Remove the axle nut (for drive axles)
Remove the large center axle nut from the wheel hub. This is typically very tight and may require impact tools or a long breaker bar with the vehicle on the ground.
Separate the ball joint or strut
For front drive axles: separate the ball joint or strut to allow the hub to move outward, creating clearance to remove the axle from the hub.
Remove the axle from the transmission
For front drive axles: carefully pry the inner CV joint out of the transmission. Use a pry bar behind the inner CV joint housing. Have a drain pan ready for transmission fluid that may spill.
Install the new axle or CV joint
Install new snap rings on the new axle. Insert the inner joint into the transmission until the snap ring clicks into place. Reinstall the outer joint into the hub, then reinstall the ball joint or strut.
Reassemble and test
Reinstall the axle nut and torque to specification (typically very high torque). Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle. Test drive at low speed to confirm no clicking, vibration, or leaks. Check transmission fluid level and top up if needed.
